Digiville is Lighthouse’s monthly event for digital and moving image artists. Each event incorporates a diverse cross-section of the digital arts community, from installation artists to animators and VJs, and involves an initial presentation of work, either by individual artists or artist groups, followed by a Q&A/discussion session. The artists invited to present their work or perform are a careful mix of well-known names and less established artists.

For this special Digiville, team members from the Cybersonica AV Lab including artists Steve Symons and Ray Lee, special guest Martyn Ware -80s pop icon as co-founder of Heaven 17 and The Human League – and selected participants will present and answer questions about their work.

This ‘Work In Progress’ Showcase is open to anyone interested in live, audiovisual performance that explores crossdisciplinary collaboration and the use of new technologies – allowing you to see how this week long residential workshop has encouraged participants to share their work, realise new technological possibilities, be inspired, challenged and stretched, develop new ideas and collaborate with others.

Expect demonstrations of audiovisual experiments utilising the Illustrious 3D-AudioScape surround sound system and numerous examples of the inventive application of technology to create immersive media and convergent art.

  • Take centre stage and become iconic characters from three great Cold War Film Classics with The Casting Scene‘s online ‘audition’ service.
  • Shelley Parker‘s emotive and atmospheric soundscape – Cast – evokes a post-apocalyptic future in the awe-inspiring grandeur of the V&A’s Cast Courts.
  • The London Games Fringe load up and invite you to play three classic Cold War themed video games: Missile Command, Defcon and the multiplayer GoldenEye 007.
  • Fashion in Film presents Beyond Espionage – a selection of some of the most eloquent newsreels and documentaries from post-war East Germany and Czechoslovakia exploring the rhetoric of “socialist fashion”.
  • Alex Veness and his custom-made camera the Xenon-Eye create grotesque, bizarrely misshapen, anxious Imaginary Cold War Portraits.
  • Stanza‘s Robotica: Control Inside the Panopticon is a playful installation that questions ideas of surveillance and tracking using robots, CCTV and sensor technologies. 
  • and Stanza‘s Sensity V&A uses a network of ‘motes’ around the V&A to collect data and drive a visualisation that reflects the ’emotional state’ of the building.

Cybersonica Social (formerly known as Çonic Social) relaunches after a summer break and at a new venue – The Flea-Pit <http://thefleapit.com> – a cafe-bar on Columbia Rd right next to the park and a place where art and socialising go hand in hand… “A perfect pit-stop” says Wallpaper Magazine 2006 (London’s Best New Destinations).

Cybersonica Social creates a slice of Cybersonica for a few brief but enjoyable hours once a month in the friendly, vibey surroundings of The Flea-Pit – and takes a new approach – themes. Each month investigates a different strand of work associated with Cybersonica with line-ups to suit. We kick off with an exploration into 3D sound and visuals – installing the Illustrious 3D-AudioScape surround system to deliver ‘ultra real’ three dimensional audio.

The First staging of a dedicated day of all things digital design with installations and interactive elements to please everyone. Come and get your hands on the latest technology and be inspired by a range of demonstrations and performances from across the digital community. Digital Design Day is scheduled to include a 2-hour session run by Apple on techniques, tips and insights. The day concludes with the Y-Design Awards; a celebration of the best creative talent in the UK’s digital community.

Between 12:30-13:30, Martyn Ware presents a showcase of innovation in interactivity and digital media.

Martyn is best known as a seminal 80s pop icon and co-founder of The Human League and Heaven 17. However, through the Illustrious Company – his recent creative venture with Vince Clarke of Depeche Mode, Yazoo and Erasure – and his current Arts Council supported convergent art project, the Future Of Sound, Martyn has been working with and and showcasing some of the latest developments in convergent media and emergent technologies. For Digital Design Day he invites a selection of inventive practitioners to share and discuss their work – guests include:
Eva Rucki – co-founder of Troikaa multi-disciplinary art and design practice.
Mike Faulkner of D-Fuse – a collective of London based artists who explore a wide range of creative media.
Andy Huntington – an interaction design consultant specialising in software and hardware prototyping and development.
Fiddian Warman – Managing Director and a Soda founder who has steered the company’s evolution in developing creative tools that help communities work, play and learn together.

(re)Actor3 brings together artists, industry and academics from the varying worlds of Performance, Computing and HCI for a lively debate and after-party event which will explore Live Public Performance and Computing. Cybersonica & Future Of Sound

Regular collaborators since 2006, Cybersonica & Future Of Sound (FOS) have have been developing a joint plan for future programming and have successfully secured support from the National Lottery through Arts Council England for an allied Future of Sound (FOS) 08/09 Tour and Cybersonica AV Lab.

Conceived and presented by Martyn Ware of the Illustrious CompanyFuture of Sound provides a forum for the discussion of new and convergent art forms. By creating immersive experiences using state-of-the-art sound technology FOS showcases leading practitioners in the fields of music and audio design.

Cybersonica were residents on the Future Of Sound Tour, 6th December 2006 – 12th April 2007 to seven arts and campus venues across England. Two Cybersonica featured artists including Chris O’Shea, The Sancho Plansquidsoup and Troika presented their work at each FOS event and a selection of sonic artworks commissioned for Cybersonica 06 and including squidsoup’s Freq2Fijuu’s Fijuu2Troika’s Schitzoporotica and Someth;ng’s Tape were exhibited where possible.

It’s been a while coming… but we’ve finally launched the Cybersonica 08 website and are announcing our programme for 2008 and beyond. We’ve devised an exciting range of projects and events that show Cybersonica continuing to evolve – shifting focus, reprioritising established strands and extending its range of activities.

In October 2008 we’re relaunching Cybersonica Social (formerly Çonic Social) – our monthly slice of Cybersonica at a new venue – The Flea-Pit, 49 Columbia Road, E2 7RG – the second Thursday of every month, 7-11pm. More details of line-ups ’til Jan ’09 to be announced on the website very soon.

On Friday, 31st October 2008, 6-30-10pm, Cybersonica, Cybersalon and Class War Games host the Cold War Modern Friday Late at the V&A. An outline programme will be announced here shortly.

Between 2-9th November 2008 we’re running the Cybersonica AV Lab – a week-long residential creative & practical workshop exploring sound, moving image, art and technology based at The Basement, Brighton and supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council England. More details and our ‘Call For Participation’ can be found at the website.

Starting on Saturday, 22nd November 2008 at De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill on Sea and culminating in a large scale event at the BFI Southbank in late Spring 2009, Cybersonica will once again be resident on the Future of Sound (FOS) 08/09 Tour to six arts and campus venues throughout the UK. Plus we’re taking part in a range of one-off events, showcases of Cybersonica artworks and collaborations with friends and associates including: (re)Actor3 & This Is LIVErpool showcase at the Contemporary Urban Centre North West on 3rd September 2008, 7pm-12 midnight; the Martyn Ware & Friends lunchtime talk between 12.30-1.30pm at D3 (Digital Design Day) – part of the London Design Festival – at the Queen Elizabeth Hall Foyer on Wednesday, 17th September 2008, 11am-6pm; and with Kinetica Museum at Spitalfields Opens Up on Sunday, 28th September 2008, from 11pm.
